The merger of Times Bank with Housing Development Financial Corporation (HDFC) Bank was the first merger of private banks. HDFC Bank acquired Centurion Bank of Punjab on 23 May 2008. As of June 2017, HDFC Bank had 4,715 branches and 12,260 ATMs operating in 2,657 cities.
HDFC Bank organized 1,115 blood donation camps on 6 December 2013 at 709 places in which 61,902 people donated blood which was included in the Guinness Book of World Records.

History of HDFC –
The history of HDFC company has been very interesting. HDFC was incorporated as a Public Limited Company on 17 October 1977. At that time this company was promoted by the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India. In 1980, it introduced the loan linked deposit scheme, in which one had to start with a passbook account with HDFC to become eligible for the loan.
After this, again in 1981, HDFC started the Non-Resident Certificate Deposit Scheme. It then introduced the Home Saving Plan in 1985, which enabled every individual to buy a house at the rate of 8.5% per annum. After this again in 1994, HDFC promoted HDFC Bank to offer banking services. It was a private sector bank which was established with the approval of RBI. In 1999, it launched its website www.hdfcindia.com, which is now known as www.hdfc.com.
In 2000 it incorporated HDFC Standard Life office in Mumbai and after a joint venture with Chubb Corporation in 2002, USA promoted HDFC Chubb General Insurance Company Limited to offer general insurance.
